Dan Boulton

Dan Boulton was born in 1973 in Enfield, North London. His work, which crosses the line between documentary, street photography and fine art which has been featured in skateboard documents. A collection of his work is soon to be published as a limited edition book by Chicago-based Parking Block Publishing. The camera which Dan uses is the Leica M6, which is a 50 mm f/2 Summircron and liford HP5 film. All the work for the southbank project and show has been shot using this setup. He's strictly sticks to one camera, one lens in his approach.

His style of photography is that he likes to take his pictures in black and white. Also he has a thing about taking pictures in skateparks. Catching the skaters in action and catching what they do at the time.

This photo is brilliantly taken, snapping the skater in action before he takes off to towards the jump. Also the use of the black and white effect makes the photo seem older than usual.

I like this picture as it also captures the skaters before there about to skate. Also this picture shows the environment around them, as you can see other skaters in the background and theirs also a dog in the background as-well.

This photo is taken perfectly, capturing the skater in mid-action, also it shows where about they skate and what the place is like, by looking at the graffiti in the background, shows that the environment isn't owned by anyone and is run by the skaters.

Question:
What got you into photography?

Section 5

All the pictures I selected all fit in well with my poster/DVD box as they all got a purpose and are all related with the topic of the film.

The photographs help make this poster/DVD box more professional, by these pictures give the audience a hint of what's in stock for this movie. The photos with the gun and the injection creates suspense towards the viewer of the poster/DVD box. Overall the photos helped create this poster to how it is

My initial idea was for Ross to have is arm out holing an invisible syringe as I will have to Photoshop that in further in the course. Also he has to have his neck looking towards his arm as well as that will fit well with my idea on him injecting a student with the MUTR:IX virus. The set up was in the media class room, but we used the black blinds as it would be easier to crop out in Photoshop.

The reason why I chose this photo was because the right amount of arm was showing and this was the best photo in which Ross looked concentrated and overall he looked like a scientist. This picture is suitable for my poster/DVD box as the actions which he's doing with his hands I would be able to easily Photoshop a injection needle . Also I am planning to flip the photo as the pupil will be on the other side of the poster.
The process of me editing this picture was that firstly, I did the auto tone/contrast/colour to give the picture more of a colourful look. As I went through the image adjustments the best one that I found was the curves, by altering the curves, this adjustment enhanced the colour of Ross's skin which made It look less dull and boring.
Overall I'm pleased with this photo as my initial plan was to enhance the skin colour to make it stand out more and to make the lab coat seem much brighter as it is in the original photo. The quality and the resolution was very good as well, as we used a high quality camera which gave me a top notch quality photo.

My initial plan was to have a picture of en eye, however I wanted the eye to be as wide as possible. The set-up for the photo was taken was in the Media class room, but I had the camera as close to the eye as I could.

I chose this photo out of the others, as It was the widest and thats what I was looking for. Also I chose this photo as a good amount of sclera. Also Its the right lighting as in some other pictures the eye is much darker and this picture the lighting is much brighter than the others.

Firstly I started by choosing the auto tone/contrast/colour. This made the sclera (white bit of the eye) stand out much more than the original photo. Then I played about in the Image adjustment settings and used 'curves' to enhance the colour of the eye itself to make it look more scarier.
Overall I'm pleased with these photograph as I am very pleased on how the sclera turned out. Also the I'm happy with how the lighting Is in this picture as there's light around the eye but you cannot see the light in the reflection of the pupil. The quality of this picture is up to high standard's which I'm also very pleased about.

My plan was to take a photo when the face was centered and no emotions was shown. Also I had to have the neck exposed as that was going to be needed for my idea of an injection within the neck. However I was going to only use half of his face anyway as that was my initial plan.

The reason why I chose this photo out of the others is that the face is centered, and that the neck is exposed as much as i planned it to be. Also their isn't any facial emotions which is what I wanted as well. This photograph suits the DVD/Poster as the neck is exposed perfectly for an injection to be injected .
The way I edited this photo was quite simple. I started of by using auto colour/tone and contrast to enhance the colour of Ross's skin. Then I played through the Image adjustments. I changed the colour balance to change the colour of his hair as it was to bright and didn't look as good. Then i used the 'Curve' adjustment to give that skin that brighter look.
Overall I think the picture looks good, as the lighting of the picture fits well as the facial colour stands out to any other colours in the photo. Also Im pleased with the resolution of the picture as its high quality.

key photograph no 2

My initial plan for this photograph was to find a shot that the arm was straight and the gun pointed straight ahead. Also I wanted the shirt sleeve not to be in the photo, so just the arm and the gun was needed. The set up for this photo was i first was going to take the photo without the tripod, but however remembered that using a tripod takes more professorially photos.

I selected this photograph out of the others, as the arm was straight, the gun was pointed straight and the  actors t-shirt wasn't showing. Also only showing the arm and the gun makes the gunman a mystery. This photo was suitable for the DVD/Poster as it shows that there's guns involved, however it makes the point that others life's could be at risk as the gunman could be pointing the gun at someone.

The process of editing this photo was quite simple, as i played through all the image settings and made my decision there. I darkened the background a-bit to make the arm and gun stand out more. I made the actors arm seem a-bit more colored as to the original photo. I also lightened the gun, as the original photo the gun was to dark to see all the details. Also I used auto tone, contrast and color to add to the finishing touches.

I was very pleased with the overall photograph as the colors turned out well and the lighting made the picture seem more professional and look better in general. Also the resolution of the picture was very good as you can see all the details within the picture.

Key Photograph Number 1

1. What was your planned intention for the initial series of photographs?

These are the photographs that i took which where going to be used in my DVD poster. My initial idea for this set of photographs was to find a photo with the right lighting. Also the right shot which made the photo seem more tense and realistic. I was going to turn off all the lights so you can just see the silhouette, but i turned a light on in the other room to shine on the side of the actors face, this made that you can see part of the gunman. I made the victim down the corridor blurry so that the victim isn't noticeable but  a mystery.

I chose this photo out of the many as I thought it was token in the right place and angle. The victim shows the expression that i was looking for and you can only see the silhouette of the victim.
This photo is suitable for my DVD case / poster as it shows that there will be action involved. Also shows danger as someones life is at risk.

The process i went through to edit this photo was that I cropped some of the edges to make the rule of third come in. As the victim was centred in the middle but I've managed to make her seem a bit to the right instead. Also I played bait through the tones and contrasts. I cropped the side bits that weren't needed to make it look more pristine. Then turned the picture to black and white which made the photo seem more mysterious. I also used auto tone, contrast and colour to fix give it the final touches.  I did all these changes as it made the photo seem more mysterious and dangerous. I loved the way the black and white made the image seem more interesting.

The the finished photo turned out really good, and i liked it very much. The lighting turned out really well just showing the side of the guns man face and leaving the victim in the background body darkened. The resolution of the picture turned out good as well as you can see all the details in the picture.

I thought this photo was amazing, as it shows Ryan Gosling and his shadow, however the shadow is different. Perhaps trying to show that is conscience is telling a different story.

I chose this photo as it captures someone as they are turning around and that they aren't posing for the camera at all. When Henri took this he quote, "I was walking behind this man when all of a sudden he turned around."The man in the picture seems surprised that his picture was taken unexpectedly.

I chose this photo as it was taken at the right time at the right place. I love the way you can see his crystal clear reflection on the puddle below him.

Narrative Photography

Narrative photography is the idea that the photographs taken will attempt to tell a story. The main aspect in narrative photography is Staged photography, this is when it involves a performance but its enacted before the shooting.  This effect embraces portraiture and character driven scenarios which is directed or manipulated by the photographer.

The first staged photograph was back in 1840 this was created by the French photographer Hippolyte Bayard. The photograph taken is named the Self Portrait as a Drowned Man. In the image its a man who pretends to commit suicide. Also during nineteenth century staged photographs involved techniques as multiple exposure, or combination printers created from many negatives. The distinct elements are staged in a studio, while the rest of the elements are manipulated in the dark room.Another photo which used these techniques was the Fading Away which was photographed by Henry Peach Robinson in 1858.

James Stephenson,Unintended Vistas.
I chose these pictures as it sums up a daily office job. The way the image is in dull colors shows that the office jobs are boring and dull. He wanted others to notice the surrounding of office jobs.
